The County Council on Aug. 6 announced the acquisition of 627 Race Street in Cambridge — the former Department of Social Services building — as the future site for the Dorchester County Health Department, citing poor conditions and limited space at the current facility. The Council said the move will require several months to transfer technology and infrastructure.
Roger Harrell of the Dorchester County Health Office thanked the Council for approving the acquisition and relocation plan. Councilman Ricky C. Travers said the relocation has been "long overdue" and apologized to Health Department staff for the poor working conditions; Councilman Mike Detmer said the new location is “in the heart of the community.”
The Council also agreed to execute a Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration permit for the Gran Fondo New York (GFNY) Cambridge cycling event set for Oct. 6, 2024, 7:30 a.m.–2:00 p.m., and approved use of Egypt Park on Oct. 8, 2024, for a Tour de Maryland event. Recreation and Parks Director Duc Trieu noted the Tour de Maryland event will provide adaptive and recumbent bikes for disabled veterans and reported 25–30 veterans registered to participate; a certificate of liability insurance will be provided.
The Council also approved the use of a portion of the Hurlock athletic field on Oct. 16, 2024, for a MOPAR MOBB Auto Group car show, contingent on submission of the required certificate of liability insurance. These approvals clear event logistics but require event organizers to provide insurance and meet any related road-closure or traffic-safety conditions set by coordinating state and county agencies.
