Dorchester County Council approves consent agenda including grants, surplus sales and procurement adverts

The Dorchester County Council on Aug. 6 approved its consent agenda, accepting multiple grants, authorizing surplus equipment dispositions and approving procurement advertisements needed for county operations.
The Council approved the minutes of July 16, 2024, and the vouchers as presented; Councilman Ricky C. Travers recorded an abstention for payments to Simmons Center Market. The council voted to continue the Senior Care Program with Maryland Department of Aging funding for July 1, 2024–June 30, 2025, at the request of Jenifer L. DuBosq, Director of Dorchester County Social Services.
Public Works requests approved included authorizing the surplus of an Aljon compactor for scrap sale to Midshore Recyclers, Inc. for $5,000 (including pickup) and sending three end-of-life county vehicles (Units #133, #135 and #138) to auction. The council also authorized staff to advertise a request for proposals for crushed stone covering Oct. 1, 2024–Sept. 30, 2026, to be funded by FY25 operating funds, and approved advertising for installation of a pavilion at Vienna Park funded by FY24 Program Open Space.
The Council accepted two FY2025 grant awards for the Sheriff's Office through the Governor's Office of Crime Control and Prevention: a Sex Offender Compliance & Enforcement grant for $9,624 to support overtime and a Maryland Criminal Intelligence Network Overdose & Drug Awareness Coordinator award for $53,261 to cover salary and travel, both with no local match required, as presented by Sheriff James W. Phillips.
The Council also presented a commendation recognizing Richard Smith on his retirement after 25 years of county service and declared August Child Support Awareness Month by proclamation.
The approvals move multiple routine operating and community-support items forward; specific contract awards, vendor selections and exact execution details will be handled by staff in subsequent procurement steps.
