The Dorchester County Council on July 16 adopted Resolution 675 to fill two Board of Education vacancies by appointing Dr. Brandy Dawson Cumberland to District 1 and Christine LaMonica to District 3.
Clerk Donna F. Lane said the Council deviated from the appointment process set out in Resolution 440 because two board members resigned in June and the Council wanted to ensure the Board of Education could convene with a full membership before upcoming election timelines. The Council approved the appointments by roll call (5–0).
Why it matters: restoring full membership on the Board of Education allows the board to deliberate and take actions without delay on governance and student-related matters. The Council noted the expedited process was chosen to avoid undermining the board’s function.
Next steps: the appointees will serve until the process and legal timelines governing school board vacancies and subsequent elections take effect.
