Mercer County declares Stage One burn ban, renews Ramsey Hill permit and approves routine budget moves

The Mercer County Commission adopted a Stage One Fire Emergency Declaration and burn ban on April 2, citing dry, windy conditions that county emergency management and fire officials said could produce very large grass fires.
HR/EM Director Alice Grinsteinner and Zap Fire Chief Michael Mohl, joined by Hazen Assistant Fire Chief Adam Sailer, told the commission that current conditions warranted a more restrictive ban and urged residents to refrain from outdoor burning until conditions improve. Commissioner Jamee Folk moved to approve the declaration; Commissioner Casey Voigt seconded and the motion was recorded as carried, with all commissioners voting aye.
The board also handled several routine matters. Commissioner Rick Bauman moved to renew Temporary Use Permit #649 for Ramsey Hill; Commissioner Mark Pierce seconded. Commissioner Jamee Folk recused herself from that vote; the motion carried as recorded. The commission approved a semi-annual liquor license application for Nana’s Kitchen in Hazen Bay after a motion from Folk and a second from Bauman.
In financial business, the commission voted to move a sheriff’s vehicle insurance check for $28,546.84 from the general fund account #1001-33810-000 into the Sheriff’s special vehicle fund account #2122-39990-000 following a motion by Bauman and a second by Voigt. The board later approved vouchers presented at the meeting totaling $15,301.89.
Commissioners also approved a letter of support related to the Lawrence Welk show anniversary after a phone presentation from Scott Wheeler; Commissioner Casey Voigt moved approval and Commissioner Jamee Folk seconded. The board recessed twice during the meeting and adjourned at 11:18 a.m. The next regular meeting is set for April 16, 2025, at 9:00 a.m. in the Mercer County Government Center boardroom in Stanton.
