Commission debates allocation of $34,058 sheriff grant; places full amount into special vehicle fund

Chairman Gene Wolf presided over a contested allocation of a $34,058 AgriBank grant presented by Sheriff Terry Ternes. Ternes said the check came from a 50/50 cost-share safety equipment grant for which his department had budgeted $15,000 and then received the full amount back.
Commissioner Mark Pierce moved to deposit $15,000 of the grant into the general fund to cover the budgeted amount and place the remaining $19,058 into the Sheriff Special Vehicle fund; Commissioner Rick Bauman seconded. The motion failed on a 2–3 vote (Pierce and Wolf voted yea; Bauman, Voigt and Folk voted nay).
After the first motion failed, Bauman moved to place the entire $34,058 into the Sheriff Special Vehicle fund; Casey Voigt seconded. That motion passed 4–1 (Bauman, Voigt, Folk and Wolf voted yea; Pierce voted nay). The board did not take further action to return the previously budgeted $15,000 to the general fund.
The commission also heard from Sheriff Ternes about a planned 911 map printer purchase tied to 911 funds. The printer has an upfront cost of $11,260.00 and a monthly service charge of $42.50 plus overages; the commission separately approved that purchase and contract, to be paid from 911 funds.
