Soil & Water board outlines contingency plan as USDA Service Center consolidation looms

Brenda Sermersheim, chair of the Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD) board, and Arlene Fleck told the Dubois County Council they are preparing a contingency plan in case the local SWCD office is vacated from the USDA Service Center building under potential federal consolidation.
Sermersheim said the SWCD does not pay rent for its current space and depends on equipment, supplies and office resources provided through the Natural Resources Conservation Service. She said a temporary hub at the Dubois County 4‑H Fairgrounds would allow continued citizen access to staff, resources and rental equipment while staff secure a longer‑term location.
Sermersheim and Fleck said they have begun discussions with the Dubois County 4‑H Council and will return to the council when details have been finalized; no formal action was requested at the meeting.
