Soil & Water Conservation District proposes 4‑H Fairgrounds hub in contingency plan

Veronica Helming, Executive Director of the Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD), and Board Chair Brenda Sermersheim presented a contingency plan to the Dubois County Commissioners on April 7 in case their office must vacate the USDA Service Center building.
The SWCD noted it currently pays no rent at the USDA Service Center and benefits from shared resources such as computers, printers and office supplies provided through the Natural Resource Conservation Service. The contingency plan proposes using space at the Dubois County 4‑H Fairgrounds as a hub for staff, equipment rental and continued public access to SWCD services if federal Service Centers are consolidated.
Commissioners gave consensus for Helming and Sermersheim to work with the 4‑H Council, which currently leases the buildings from the county, and to pursue arrangements that would maintain citizen access to conservation staff and resources.
