Commissioners approve $596,562.63 countywide bridge inspection contract

The Dubois County Commissioners on Feb. 18 approved a $596,562.63 consulting contract with SJCA, Inc. to perform countywide bridge inspections for the 2026–2029 cycle.
The contract was presented by Highway Engineer Brent Wendholt, who told the board the county’s share will be 20 percent and federal funds will cover the remaining 80 percent. The motion to approve the consulting document carried 2-0.
Wendholt also briefed the board on related highway items at the same time, including a planned INDOT closure of State Road 164 in Celestine (scheduled for the week of March 24, 2025) and designation of local streets as an unofficial detour during the closure. The board approved the unofficial detour memorandum of understanding during the same segment of the meeting.
The board recorded a request from Wendholt to seek an additional appropriation of $290,000 from the MVH fund to support highway needs; the commissioners gave consensus to proceed with the appropriation request to the County Council.
The bridge-inspection approval is the most substantial procurement item on the commissioners’ agenda and will proceed according to the contract terms and funding breakdown approved by the board.
