Commissioners table request for opioid-settlement funding for veterans recovery pilot

The Dubois County Commissioners on Jan. 20 heard a request for opioid-settlement funds from Chris "Boone" Taylor of Operation Mind Body and Soul for a two-year pilot program to expand behavioral health and opioid-recovery supports for veterans, law enforcement and first responders.
Taylor asked for $60,000 for Year 1 and $40,000 for Year 2 to provide coordinated access to behavioral-health services, peer-support recovery networks and trauma-informed wellness. He also requested $50,000 to remodel a community wellness gym intended to serve veterans and first responders. Taylor said the program aligns with Indiana’s opioid settlement abatement categories and Exhibit E and IC 4-12-16.2-5 as discussed in the presentation; he noted the organization is pursuing federal and state grants as well.
Commissioner Chad Blessinger expressed concern that the proposed gym remodel might not meet the restrictions in Exhibit B for opioid-restricted fund uses. David Fynn spoke in support of the organization. After discussion, the commissioners reached a consensus to table the funding decision and revisit it at the Feb. 2 meeting.
No funding was authorized on Jan. 20; commissioners directed staff to place the item on the Feb. 2 agenda for further consideration and clarification about eligible uses under the opioid settlement rules.
