Dubois County approves $1M INDOT paving contract, pursues $3.79M bridge safety grant

The Dubois County Commissioners approved an INDOT Community Crossings contract for $1,000,000 to cover about 80% of paving costs on three county roads, authorized county signing, set a Jan. 20 bid deadline and said they will interview for a possible $3,789,000 federal bridge safety grant.
The Dubois County Commissioners on Jan. 5 approved an INDOT Community Crossings contract for $1,000,000 to cover roughly 80% of the cost to pave Club Road, St. Anthony Road N and 550 W and granted county staff permission to sign the agreement.
Highway Engineer Levi Leffert presented the contract and told the board the CCMG 2026-01 paving projects were first advertised Dec. 30, 2025 and will be readvertised Jan. 6, 2026. Sealed bids will be accepted until 9:00 a.m. Eastern on Jan. 20, 2026 and will be opened publicly, Leffert said. The board approved the request by motion, second and unanimous vote.
Leffert also said a precast concrete box culvert installation will close St. Anthony Road N beginning Jan. 5 about 0.6 miles north of Santine Road; the work is anticipated to reopen Friday, Jan. 9, 2026, barring unforeseen circumstances. He added that Bridge 116 on CR 820E (about 0.8 miles north of Schnellville Road) is slated for beam-and-deck replacement at a date to be determined.
The county is also pursuing a federal Bridge Safety Improvement grant. Leffert said he will interview with the INDOT scoring committee on Jan. 6 for a proposal that would add guardrails and end treatments to multiple county bridges and, if selected, could award up to $3,789,000.
Separately, Leffert noted he received a $2,000 scholarship to attend the National Association of County Engineers conference in April; the commissioners permitted him to attend.
The board’s approvals included formal motions to accept the INDOT contract and to allow staff to advertise and receive bids, each carried unanimously. Public bidding details and project schedules will be posted by the Highway Department.
