Calhoun County Commission moves forward with multiple public-nuisance abatements, tables one after address dispute
Summary
The commission voted Oct. 10 to proceed with abatement on six properties and table discussion for one Parkwood Drive parcel after a speaker said the recorded address was incorrect; the board also declared eight additional properties as public nuisances and approved related invoices and dismissals.
Calhoun County’s Commission took multiple actions Oct. 10 on property nuisances, ordering abatement work on several parcels, dismissing others and approving removal costs.
Environmental Programs Manager Kraig Mize recommended proceeding with abatements on seven properties listed in the meeting materials. Paul Brown addressed the commission to clarify that the property listed as 1879 Parkwood Drive was actually 1865 Parkwood Drive; following that clarification Commissioner Shears moved to table discussion of the Parkwood property and Commissioners voted to table it. Commissioners then voted to proceed with abatements for the remaining properties (#2–#7) as Mize recommended.
Separately, Mize recommended dismissing findings of public nuisance on four properties; Ms. Hughes, representing one of those properties, expressed gratitude to Mize for assistance. The commission voted unanimously to dismiss those nuisances.
Mize also recommended approving an invoice of $5,526.00 to cover removal costs at 101 W. 35th Street, Anniston (Corridor Gardens InTown LLC); the commission approved the invoice by voice vote. Later in the meeting Mize recommended declaring public nuisances on eight additional properties; owners Wayne Guthrie and Jared Walling said they are addressing their properties (Guthrie said he is renovating and has ordered supplies; Walling said his property has been cleaned). Commissioners voted unanimously to declare those nuisances and Mize offered to meet with owners after the meeting.
All motions related to nuisances were adopted by unanimous voice vote. The meeting record notes that property owners were properly notified of the meetings and listed the addresses and owning parties in the agenda materials.
