The Calhoun County Commission on Oct. 24 approved an agreement with the City of Gadsden to house municipal inmates in the Calhoun County Jail and approved a companion memorandum of understanding on how funds received for that housing will be disbursed.
County Administrator Jonathan Gaddy presented the agreement to house inmates; Commissioner Howell moved and Commissioner Patterson seconded authorization for the chairman to sign and the motion passed unanimously. Gaddy also presented an MOU with the sheriff regarding disbursement of funds received from Gadsden. Commissioner Howell moved to authorize the chairman to sign the MOU pending its final form; Commissioner Shears seconded and the motion carried unanimously by voice vote.
Why it matters: Intergovernmental housing agreements affect jail capacity, county operational costs and revenue flows; the MOU establishes how payments from the City of Gadsden will be handled by the sheriff’s office and county administration.
What’s next: The agreement and MOU are on file; county administration and the sheriff will finalize the MOU’s wording and implement fund disbursement procedures.
