Calhoun County commissioners adopt $2 vehicle registration fee to fund sheriff’s law enforcement

The Calhoun County Commission voted unanimously Oct. 10 to adopt an additional $2 vehicle license and registration fee authorized by Alabama Act No. 2024-203. The revenue will be collected by the License Commissioner and remitted monthly to the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office to be deposited in its Law Enforcement Fund.
County Administrator Jonathan Gaddy presented the resolution to the five-member commission. Commissioner Shears explained the purpose of the fee, saying it was introduced “to support the Sheriff’s Office after the loss of pistol permit funding.” A roll call vote recorded all commissioners from Districts 1 through 5 in favor of the measure.
The commission’s vote followed routine agenda business and several contract and procurement items. The motion to adopt the fee was moved and seconded and passed with no dissent.
The commission did not set a separate effective date in the meeting minutes; the resolution cites Act No. 2024-203 as the statutory authorization and specifies that collections will be remitted monthly to the sheriff’s fund. The commission adjourned at 10:22 a.m.; its next regular meeting is scheduled for Oct. 24, 2024.
