Calhoun County approves landfill rate increase as Meridian Waste completes Arrow Disposal acquisition; Chamber and A.S.A.P. announce local events

Calhoun County commissioners on Sept. 12 adopted a resolution to increase landfill solid-waste disposal rates effective Oct. 1, 2024, and approved a resolution recognizing that Meridian Waste Alabama, LLC has acquired the shares and stock of Arrow Disposal Services, Inc.; the resolution stated the transaction will not disrupt services under the existing agreement.
County Administrator Jonathan Gaddy presented the measures; Commissioner Wilson moved to adopt the landfill rate increase resolution and Commissioner Shears seconded; the measure passed unanimously. The commission also adopted a resolution regarding Meridian Waste’s acquisition, which commissioners said would not disrupt services as outlined in the county's existing agreement.
During the public comment period, Chandy Gordon, a prevention specialist with A.S.A.P., thanked the commission for continued support and announced a free Faith-Based Conference scheduled for Sept. 19–20. Audrey Maxwell, the Chamber of Commerce tourism director, said the Freedom Riders National Monument will hold public open houses on Sept. 24 to collect community feedback on development plans and noted the National Park Service has appointed Dr. Herts as the superintendent for the new site. Jakob Williamson, the Chamber public affairs coordinator, announced the Chamber’s State of Agriculture event on Sept. 18.
All measures at the meeting were adopted by unanimous voice votes. The commission adjourned at 10:34 a.m. and announced its next regular meeting for Sept. 26, 2024, at 10:00 a.m.
