Calhoun County Commission orders abatements for eight properties, declares five nuisances

The Calhoun County Commission on Sept. 12 authorized abatement actions on eight properties and moved to dismiss nuisance findings on 11 others after presentations from Environmental Programs Manager Kraig Mize.
Mize recommended proceeding with abatements at eight addresses in Anniston, Jacksonville, Oxford and surrounding areas. Commissioner Shears moved to abate as recommended and Commissioner Howell seconded; the motion carried unanimously by voice vote. Neighbors of 4759 Eulaton Road attended to ask about progress in clearing the property, and Tawanna Taylor, property manager for 245 Smith Street, offered to assist in cleanup coordination.
Separately, Mize recommended dismissing public nuisance determinations for 11 properties where owners had been properly notified but did not appear. Commissioner Patterson moved to dismiss the listed properties as recommended; Commissioner Howell seconded and the motion carried unanimously.
Mize also presented five properties recommended to be declared public nuisances; Commissioner Shears moved to declare the properties as nuisances, Commissioner Howell seconded, and the commission approved the declarations by unanimous voice vote. The properties, owners and specific addresses are recorded in the meeting file (resolutions in file).
The commission also authorized a contract award for public nuisance demolition and removal to Wendy Thornton and Parris Contracting and Mechanical during the same meeting, enabling the county to proceed with cleanup work on properties for which abatement and demolition were approved.
The actions are recorded in the meeting resolutions and will allow county staff to pursue demolition, removal and follow-up coordination with affected neighbors and property managers. No votes were recorded against any of the measures; all moved by motion and passed unanimously.
The commission will monitor abatement progress through its normal enforcement channels and the related resolutions and agreements are attached to the meeting record.
