Calhoun County commission orders abatements, declares 16 nuisances and approves removal invoices

The Calhoun County Commission on Aug. 8 unanimously approved a series of nuisance-related actions, including motions to abate seven properties, dismiss five nuisance cases, declare 16 properties as public nuisances, and approve invoices for removal costs on two lots.
Environmental Programs Manager Kraig Mize presented the recommendations. Commissioner Howell moved to abate seven properties as recommended; Commissioner Shears seconded and the motion carried by unanimous voice vote. Mize then recommended dismissing nuisance actions for five properties; Commissioner Wilson moved to dismiss as recommended, and the motion carried unanimously.
The commission approved invoices to cover removal costs for two properties: $4,526.00 for 814 S. Hollingsworth Drive (listed to Rachel Haynes c/o Mary E. Haynes) and $3,526.00 for 1504 Piedmont Jacksonville Road (Vinson & Donna Rascoe). Commissioner Howell moved to approve the invoices; Commissioner Shears seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
Mr. Mize also recommended declaring 16 additional properties public nuisances in Anniston, Oxford, Jacksonville, Piedmont and Wellington. Property representatives spoke during the discussion. Charlene Tolbert said the property at 1332 Packard Street "is being cleaned." Cynthia Greenwood asked to meet with Mr. Mize to resolve issues at 3608 Noble Street. Michael Austin said cleanup had begun at 10270 New Liberty Road and that he had photographs showing progress. Lisa Hughes Racca said she "did not receive the first notice regarding the nuisance" after a fire at 540 Cottaquilla Road and that she is working to get the property cleaned.
Commissioner Patterson moved to declare the properties as recommended; Commissioner Howell seconded and the motion carried unanimously. Resolutions for the abatements and declarations were placed in the meeting record.
