Calhoun County declares 15 properties public nuisances and awards demolition bids

The Calhoun County Commission declared 15 properties across the county public nuisances and authorized contracts to remove blighted structures at its June 13 meeting.
Environmental Programs Manager Kraig Mize recommended declaring the 15 properties public nuisances after owners were notified. Commissioner Henderson moved to declare the properties as recommended; Commissioner Howell seconded and the motion carried by unanimous voice vote. Among the addresses named for declaration was 1307 Montevallo Road in Weaver; Larcus Eldon Medders told the commission that the property "had belonged to his sister" and that he had inherited it and needed to speak further with Mr. Mize about the nuisances.
Earlier in the meeting Mr. Mize had recommended proceeding with abatements on three properties (5408 Glade Road; 2305 W. D Street; and 1012 Patterson Street). William O’Dell addressed the commission about 1012 Patterson Street and said he "had cleaned the property." The commission voted to approve abatements for the first two properties and to table the matter for 1012 Patterson Street.
Administrator Jonathan Gaddy presented a resolution awarding Public Nuisance Demolition & Removal to the lowest, most responsive bidders, named in the resolution as Wendy Thornton and Belle It Out. The commission adopted the resolution on a motion from Commissioner Henderson with a second from Commissioner Howell; the vote was unanimous.
The commission also approved dismissal of two previously listed nuisances (325 Marshall Street and 89 Wildman Road) after staff recommended dismissal and no owners were present to object.
Why it matters: declaring properties public nuisances clears the way for county-sanctioned cleanups and potential demolition, and the demolition contract award provides the county immediate contractors to perform removals. Some owners addressed the commission seeking clarifications or asking to resolve the issues before enforcement.
