Calhoun County Commission declares nuisances on 13 properties, approves removal invoices totaling $5,006

The Calhoun County Commission on May 23 declared a series of public nuisances on multiple residential properties and approved invoices to cover removal costs.
Environmental Programs Manager Kraig Mize recommended proceeding with abatements for six properties at the start of the meeting and later recommended declaring an additional seven properties as nuisances, bringing the total declared at this session to 13. Commissioners moved, seconded and adopted the declarations by unanimous voice vote. Owners were notified in advance; most were not present. Joseph D. Smith Jr. spoke for one property (89 Wildman Road) and told the manager he had cleaned the property and would speak with staff after the meeting.
The commission also recommended dismissing two previously listed nuisances (731 S. Ledbetter Street and 41 Boozer Drive) and approved six invoices to cover the cost of removal at six properties: $326; $326; $526; $1,026; $2,526; and $276, for a total of $5,006. Commissioner Henderson moved to approve the invoices and Commissioner Wilson seconded; the motion carried unanimously.
County staff noted that property owners had been adequately notified of the meeting; no owners were present to contest the actions except for the one speaker who reported cleanup efforts. The meeting record indicates resolutions are on file for the declarations, dismissals and invoice approvals.
