Audit finds aging city servers; council warned replacement could cost tens of thousands

Interim City Manager Kimberly Hines introduced Tom Stiehl of RS Technology, who told the council that much of Gladwin’s municipal hardware is aging and several systems will likely need replacement.
"Aging technology of the city’s equipment" was how Stiehl summarized the assessment; Treasurer Angela Bigham told the council a vendor quote to replace the server at city hall and the police department was $18,000 for each server. Hines said she had been told that moving the finance system (BS&A) to the cloud would eliminate the need for an on‑site server, but the RS Technology assessment indicated a server would still be required for other city functions and for police systems with separate cybersecurity standards. Hines said total replacement and related cyber-security compliance costs could be as much as $70,000.
The presentation was informational only; no motion or funding decision was made at the meeting. Council members did not take formal action but were advised that the city needs to plan for server and workstation replacement and for police-specific cybersecurity requirements before implementing cloud migrations that were thought to eliminate servers.
