Three residents express interest in Gladwin council vacancy; council appoints Mike Smith 5–1

Three residents used the public-comment period at the Nov. 3 Gladwin City Council meeting to say they wanted to fill a vacant council seat.
Nancy Bodnar opened public comment with a community announcement. Monica Antes stated her interest in appointment to the council and noted she currently serves on the Parks Commission. Mike Smith said he was interested in returning to the council and that he had previously served on the council for 21 years. Ben Franz also expressed interest and said he has lived in Gladwin for more than four years.
Following those remarks, the council considered appointments during new business. A motion to appoint Monica Antes (moved by Council Member Cristy Gutierrez and supported by Council Member Deb Platt) failed on a roll-call vote: Ayes — Gutierrez, Platt; Nays — Caffrey, Crawford, Darlington, Winarski. The council subsequently voted to appoint Mike Smith. The motion to appoint Smith, made by Council Member John Caffrey and supported by Council Member Linda Winarski, carried on a 5–1 roll-call vote (Ayes: Caffrey, Crawford, Darlington, Platt, Winarski; Nay: Gutierrez). The transcript does not record subsequent swearing-in or the effective date of Smith’s seat-filling.
The appointment resolves the vacancy for now; the council also approved a separate Planning Commission appointment (Kevin Brott) during the same meeting. Mayor Sarah Kile thanked all three candidates for considering service on the council.
