Western Oklahoma State College plans 2026 centennial events and announces $4.8M Bitter Creek Shooting Sports project groundbreaking

President Dr. Chad Wiginton delivered the President’s Report at the Oct. 21 Board meeting, highlighting recent recognitions, scholarship awards and upcoming campus projects.
Dr. Wiginton said Western sent 23 employees to the 2025 Oklahoma Association of Community Colleges (OACC) Annual Conference and that several Western employees were honored with awards including Larry Duffy’s induction into the OACC Hall of Fame and recognitions for Beth Barber, Bruce Wilson and Beau Allen. The Agriculture Department honored 36 students at the Agriculture Scholarship Luncheon and 70 scholarships totaling $39,900 were awarded with support from the Ag Advisory Board and Southwest Oklahoma donors.
Looking ahead, Dr. Wiginton outlined preliminary plans for Western’s 100-year anniversary in 2026. The college is planning a year of smaller celebrations rather than a single large event, has commissioned a new 100-year logo and contracted with an architect to design a new sign at Tamarack and Main; a fundraising campaign is planned to support the sign project.
Dr. Wiginton also announced that the Bitter Creek Shooting Sports complex groundbreaking will be held Nov. 6 at 10:00 a.m. He described the project as a $4.8 million facility approved by the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Commission that will serve Western, Altus FFA and Jackson County shooting sports.
