Roper, Washington County discuss closer cooperation; Early College move and economic ideas raised

County officials urged better, more-direct coordination between Roper and the county's department heads at a joint meeting Wednesday.
"We should have some meetings with the Departments that they deal with the most (such as Planning)," said Curtis Potter, County Manager/County Attorney, recommending that town officials contact department heads, then county management, and then commissioners if issues persist.
Councilman Charles Sharpe asked whether the school in Roper will still be needed after a new school is built. Potter said there is an agreement to move the Early College to Roper. Sharpe also asked whether the town could attract a gas station near Mill Pond as an economic opportunity; county officials did not commit to a project but noted the question as part of broader local economic-development discussion.
Commissioner Ann C. Keyes, speaking from her experience as a retired planner, described how the planning and inspection office operates and suggested residents sign up for HyperReach alerts so they receive important county notices. Mayor Denise Blount asked Public Utilities Director Lee Sasser to provide courtesy notice to the town if an 811 locate request affects Roper; Potter and Sasser agreed to work on a notification method.
No formal intergovernmental agreement was adopted at the meeting; county staff offered to provide resources and follow up with departmental contacts.
