County meeting highlights: family-violence center update, hospital equipment, animal shelter and holiday events

Several community and service updates were included in the board’s Dec. 4 packet and public forum.
County Manager/County Attorney Curtis S. Potter introduced Jason Squires as the county’s new Assistant County Manager; Squires commented he was pleased to join the county. Doretha Garrett, Victim Advocate II for the Center for Family Violence Prevention, described the organization’s history (established in 1983 from a grant) and said it provides a range of services to victims of domestic violence; she said someone from the Center’s board will appear at a future meeting to discuss funding requests. Frank Avignone of Washington Regional Medical Center reported that WRMC will receive a new X-ray and CT machine and is renovating its radiology lab. Sandra Floyd presented about the Washington County Animal Shelter and its volunteer program. Resident Chester McDowell urged the board to secure more land to expand the Civic Center for activities in the Skinnersville area.
Chair Keyes recognized Facilities Director Ricky Young as Employee of the Quarter for notable performance across departments. Clerk Julie J. Bennett and staff also reminded commissioners of holiday events: the Plymouth Parade & Marketplace (Dec. 7), Creswell Parade (Dec. 9) and Roper Parade (Dec. 16), and the employee Christmas breakfast on Dec. 15.
