The Washington County Board of Commissioners elected Commissioner Ann C. Keyes as chair and Commissioner Carol V. Phelps as vice-chair during its Dec. 4, 2023, organizational meeting in Plymouth.
Current Chair Julius Walker opened the meeting and called for nominations; Commissioner Carol V. Phelps nominated Ann C. Keyes for chair, and Commissioner John C. Spruill seconded. The board voted unanimously to elect Keyes. Keyes then presided and called for a vice-chair nomination; Commissioner Spruill nominated Phelps, Commissioner Walker seconded, and the vote was unanimous.
The board also approved several appointments. Julie J. Bennett, clerk to the board, announced that Bobby Brown was appointed to finish the term on the Washington County ABC Board previously held by Ronnie Barnes. The board approved the reappointment of Brown and the appointment of Cynthia Downing to the Washington County Planning Board effective Jan. 1, 2024. Downing introduced herself at the meeting and said she looks forward to serving on the Planning Board.
Other staffing and introductions at the meeting included Curtis S. Potter, who introduced Jason Squires as the county’s new Assistant County Manager. Squires said he was pleased to join county staff.
The meeting concluded with routine adjournment procedures; the board scheduled follow-up consideration of one Planning Board seat and other committee recruitment matters for a later meeting.
