Asia Melton, a Lead for North Carolina (LFNC) fellow, presented information to the Washington County Board of Commissioners about a 1/4‑cent sales tax referendum that will appear on the March 5, 2024 ballot. Commissioners praised Melton’s presentation; Chair Ann C. Keyes and Commissioner Carol Phelps complimented her enthusiasm.
County Manager Curtis S. Potter said funds for the county’s portion of the educational mailing are running short and that he will submit a budget amendment (BA/BT) to tap contingency funds to cover additional postcard mailings to inform voters. The board did not take a formal vote on outreach funding at this meeting; Potter said he would bring the requested BA/BT to the commissioners for consideration.
Potter also reminded the board of other upcoming administrative dates and go‑live items tied to county operations; the strategic plan will go to a public‑hearing at the next commissioners meeting.
No formal endorsement of the referendum was taken by the board during the presentation.
