Charlotte County commits $5.45 million to CCPS as board hears proposed 2025–26 operations budget

Charlotte County Board of Supervisors Chairman Walter T. Bailey convened a public hearing on the proposed 2025–26 CCPS operations budget on May 1, 2025, at the Administration Building.
County Administrator Daniel N. Witt told the board that “this is the first time in his tenure as County Administrator that a consolidated budget has not been feasible” because the schools needed to approve their budget to negotiate teacher salaries. He said the county has committed $5,454,660 to CCPS, including $45,000 discussed previously to help offset rising employee insurance costs, and that the county will pay $143,750 for ongoing debt service from previous years.
The figures presented were framed as county contributions distinct from revenue the schools receive through a sales tax restricted for school projects. When Chairman Bailey asked about that dedicated sales-tax revenue, Witt said, “this month's revenue was around $53,000, but it has been as high as $84,000,” and noted those funds are used for school renovations and the capital improvement program and are separate from the operations budget.
Vice-Chair Hazel Bowman Smith questioned the overall increase in the schools' budget for the coming year. Witt responded that the total increase was $250,000, which included the previously mentioned $45,000 and that the remainder resulted from a state-mandated increase.
No members of the public signed up to speak during the hearing. Earlier in the meeting, Supervisor Derek Toombs moved to approve the agenda; Supervisor Noah Davis seconded the motion, which carried with all members present voting yes. By consensus the board set the public hearing for the FY2025/2026 County budget for May 28, 2025, at 5:00 p.m., with budget adoption scheduled at the Board's regular meeting on June 11, 2025, at 6:00 p.m. Chairman Bailey then adjourned the meeting.
