The Charlotte County Board of Supervisors unanimously appointed Sherry Hudson Tharpe on April 9 to fill the vacant County Seat (A), citing procedures required under state law. Vice-Chair Hazel Bowman Smith nominated Tharpe; nominations were closed and the Board adopted a resolution confirming the interim appointment.
The resolution states the appointment follows a March 26 special meeting in which the Board announced nominees and made each candidate’s resume and required materials available for public inspection. The appointee will hold the seat until the qualified voters of County Seat (A) elect a replacement in a special election set for Nov. 4, 2025, and the person elected has qualified, the resolution says.
Chairman Walter T. Bailey presided over the meeting and the roll-call vote recorded every supervisor as voting “yea.” The Board also followed state statutory procedures for closed-session certification: after a closed meeting to discuss candidates and volunteer fire-department oversight, supervisors certified by roll call that only matters identified in the motion were discussed.
The appointment was entered into the official minutes and the Board certified the vote as accurate. The Board adjourned the special called meeting and then proceeded with the regular agenda.
