Laurel fire chief says EOC ready after live-burn training; extrication gear purchase to be reimbursed

Fire Chief JW Hopper told the Emergency Services Committee on Nov. 24 that the Laurel Fire Department conducted live-structure training over the weekend and continues rookie-school instruction for new firefighters.
Chief Hopper said one recruit returned to training after being previously deployed and noted that the department is purchasing extrication gear now, with a reimbursement arrangement of $10,000 per year for three years. "There will be a budget amendment coming before council," he said.
Chief Hopper also reported that the meeting room at the FAP has been configured as an Emergency Operations Center and "can even accommodate dispatch if something happens to the dispatch center." He said the department expects to transition from Emergency Reporting to Emergency Networking as part of its reporting and interoperability updates.
The department’s written report included staffing and training metrics through the reporting window and thanked city staff and volunteers for their continued service. No formal vote was taken; Chief Hopper said staff will present the budget amendment to the council when details are finalized.
