Chase County directs attorney to draft agreement for three-body mortuary cooler to be housed at Liewer Funeral Home

Stephen Mulder of Liewer Funeral Home asked the Chase County Commissioners on June 11 to authorize purchase of a three-body mortuary cooler to be housed at Liewer Funeral Home and used by county law enforcement in cases requiring autopsy or temporary cold storage.
Mulder told the board that Liewer Funeral Home currently lacks cold storage for such cases and proposed that the county purchase the cooler while Liewer would cover utilities and maintenance; sheriff deputies would have keypad access to the unit. He also suggested the county could charge other counties on a per-use basis if neighboring counties needed temporary storage.
After Mulder's request, Chairman Jacci Brown moved to direct the County Attorney to draft an agreement between Chase County and Liewer Funeral Home covering purchase and use of a three-body mortuary cooler. Commissioner Billie Muehlenkamp seconded the motion, and the board voted unanimously to direct the attorney to prepare an agreement. The approval to advance the agreement means the purchase and the finalized agreement will be considered on a future agenda for formal approval.
The board did not authorize funds or execute a purchase at the June 11 meeting; the motion asked only for a formal agreement to be drafted. That agreement and any procurement action will return to the board for review and formal vote when presented.
