Prairie Sage Trail committee wins contingent support from commissioners; resident objects

Representatives of the Prairie Sage Trail Committee asked the Chase County Commissioners on June 25 to sign a letter of support for a proposed walking trail that would pass along portions of the fairgrounds.
Jim Pirog and Jan Elliott described a modified route that enters the fairgrounds at the south entrance by the JayCee Hall, uses the existing road through the fairgrounds, exits at the north end and continues east along the fairgrounds’ north edge before returning along the southeast corner to the point of beginning. The board indicated general support for the proposed alignment while noting easement and long-term maintenance issues need resolution before any construction or formal access agreements are approved.
Commissioner Kurt Bernhardt moved to sign a letter of support contingent on satisfactory determination of the route, resolution of easement matters and agreement on long-term maintenance responsibilities; the motion passed unanimously. The letter of support was explicitly conditioned on those outstanding items.
Resident Duane Dinnel spoke in open forum and objected to granting permission for the walking path, stating he believed the project would use county property to benefit a small group rather than the broader county. Chairman Jacci Brown and other commissioners responded that the initiative is in early stages, and no easements or construction approvals are being granted at this time.
The board did not vote to grant easements or approve construction; the action recorded was a contingent letter of support to assist the Prairie Sage Trail Committee in pursuing required permissions and negotiations.
