Parma Heights officials outline summer events, safety training and grant applications

At the June 10 Parma Heights City Council meeting, municipal leaders summarized summer programming, public-safety training and ongoing grant work affecting seniors, parks and public infrastructure.
Recreation Director Bacci congratulated the 2023–24 youth soccer teams and announced open registration for fall soccer, T-ball and swim team. Bacci said the first pool movie will be the film "CARS," with resident tickets priced at $3 and non-resident tickets at $5; flotation devices will be allowed. She also announced a "Christmas in July" event set for Saturday, July 27 from 1–4 p.m., featuring pool access and holiday-themed concessions.
Safety Director Scharschmidt reported the departments participated in mock crash OBI scenarios at Valley Forge and Holy Name High Schools and said city hydrant flushing is concluding with Cleveland Water replacing nonfunctional hydrants. Scharschmidt also announced Rescue Task Force active-shooter training scheduled for June 21 at Holy Name High School and said, "The cost is reimbursed by the County." (June 21 training date as stated in the meeting.)
Mayor Gallo reported the Senior Center served or delivered 1,402 meals over the prior two weeks and described upcoming senior trips, including a mystery bus trip and transportation to a Father's Day car show. The mayor said the city applied for a Cuyahoga County Healthy Urban Tree grant for a project estimated at about $73,000 that would require a 10% local match; the mayor said the anticipated award is $66,000. The mayor also noted an ODNR Natures Work grant application for a playground at Greenbriar Commons and continued work on a Community Development Block Grant for Dennison improvements.
These reports were presented for council information; no council action was taken on the grants or program scheduling at this meeting.
