Madison County board authorizes demolition of unsafe buildings, lists three properties
Summary
The County Board authorized the Building & Zoning Department and Community Development to demolish specified blighted or unsafe structures and to perfect liens to recover costs under 55 ILCS 5/5-1121(d); three addresses were named in the resolution.
The Madison County Board on Aug. 18 authorized demolition of properties the county building official identified as blighted, vacant or structurally unsafe and directed the Community Development Department to take steps to secure workers and pay demolition fees.
The resolution identified three common addresses targeted for demolition review, authorized use of funds and procedures already established by the Community Development Department, and cited 55 ILCS 5/5-1121(d) as the legal basis allowing counties to expedite removal of structures that present an immediate hazard. The resolution also says demolition costs can be made a lien on the property and enforceable by foreclosure.
Why it matters: The action gives county staff authority to remove structures the building official has found to be hazardous and to pursue liens to recoup costs. The resolution lists specific addresses in Edwardsville and Granite City and directs county agents to perfect liens and pursue foreclosure where appropriate.
Board action: The motion to adopt the resolution was approved unanimously (27-0). The resolution was submitted and read by Building & Zoning Committee chairman Mick Madison.
What's next: The Building & Zoning Department, working through Community Development, is authorized to proceed with demolition steps and lien perfection per county procedures.
