The Soddy‑Daisy City Commission on July 20 approved several public‑works and construction contracts and a capital project for Fire Station 1.
City Manager Johnson said George Wright Construction submitted the only bid for adding bedrooms at Fire Station 1: $134,185. The commission approved the contract and a related budget amendment; the vote was 4–1 with Commissioner Penney dissenting (ayes: Mayor Everett, Vice‑Mayor Coleman, Commissioner Keith, Commissioner Shipley; nay: Commissioner Penney).
Public Works Director Steve Grant reviewed bids for asphalt and in‑place asphalt, saying several firms (Southeastern Materials/Talley and Hedgecoth Construction) submitted complementary bids and awarding contracts to multiple bidders would provide flexibility. The commission approved awarding the asphalt work to the recommended bidders.
Only one concrete bid was received from Twin K (formerly P & S Concrete); commissioners approved awarding the concrete work to Twin K and noted the city maintains an account with Sequatchie Concrete Service for emergency purchases.
The commission also authorized the city to sign an AIA contract for architectural services with Allen & Hoshall (example fee of 7% cited) and approved purchasing a 2023 Dodge Durango for $39,592 to replace a totaled patrol vehicle; insurance will cover about $36,000 and the city will pay the balance.
Grant said he has requested information from bidders on milling Back Valley Road to evaluate reuse. The multi‑vendor approach was presented as a way to keep work moving when individual contractors cannot perform specific tasks.
Approvals for the procurement items were unanimous except for the Fire Station 1 bid where one commissioner voted no. The commission also authorized staff to proceed with contract execution and related budget amendments where required.
