The Soddy‑Daisy Board authorized the City Manager on Aug. 17 to sign a Department of Finance and Administration Violent Crime Intervention (VCI) grant contract that City Manager Johnson said will fund cameras throughout the city and parks and is 100% grant‑funded. The board approved the signature authorization unanimously.
Separately, Johnson requested and the board approved authorization for him to sign the State School Resource Officer (SRO) grant contract tied to recently approved placements at Ivy Academy and Skillern Elementary. The board had previously agreed to fund up to $60,000 for any SRO funding overages; Johnson requested signature authority to finalize the State contract.
The board also approved a purchase order of $79,184 for two patrol vehicles to replace units used by the SROs. Mayor Everett said he recently spoke with Senator Watson, who is working to increase SRO grant amounts to help cover equipment costs that current SRO grants do not include. Police Captain Petty said the department typically replaces patrol cars before they reach about 150,000 miles (roughly five to six years).
All three requests (VCI grant contract signature, SRO grant signature, and the patrol‑vehicle purchase order) were approved by unanimous vote during the meeting. City staff indicated they will explore capital grants to offset future equipment costs.
