Summary
The board approved a picnic request for the Christian Motorcycles Association, announced a community garden groundbreaking and discussed cleanup enforcement for burnt and overgrown properties; commissioners also sought repairs to school-zone signage and defended the use of license-plate cameras.
During public participation on Nov. 16, Randall Beavers, vice president of the Christian Motorcycles Association, requested permission to hold an appreciation picnic and fundraiser at Veterans Park on the second Saturday in April 2024; the board approved the request unanimously.
City Manager Johnson announced the KELCURT Foundation will hold a groundbreaking for a community garden at the site of the former Soddy-Daisy High School on Monday, Nov. 20 at 3:00 p.m. Commissioner Keith raised concerns about cleanup of a burnt house on Dayton Pike; Public Works Director Grant said the owner was given until the end of December to clean up the property, after which the city could abate the nuisance and place a lien. An overgrown property at Brumlow Hollow Road and Old Dayton Pike is tied up in litigation, City Attorney Elliott said; he will check the suit’s status.
Vice-Mayor Coleman requested new “End of School Zone” signs for Ivy Academy and Soddy-Daisy Middle School and reported a north indicator not working; Public Works Director Grant and the fire chief are addressing the signage and a damaged roadside drain tile at Loop Road and Old Dayton Pike. Commissioner Shipley praised school-zone cameras, saying they helped police locate and arrest suspects near Normal Park Elementary. Mayor Everett reiterated that cameras can assist investigations despite privacy concerns, saying, “if you ever have a child or family member abducted, the cameras could be instrumental in saving a life.” The board agreed to cancel the last December and first January meetings and adjourned at 7:52 p.m.
