Soddy-Daisy approves first reading of budget amendment, authorizes vendor change for ladder truck work

At its Nov. 16 meeting, the Soddy-Daisy Board of Commissioners approved the first reading of an ordinance amending the 2023–24 General Fund budget to carry forward incomplete projects and account for newly awarded grants.
City Manager Johnson said the amendment moves forward projects budgeted the prior year but not completed, including a bedroom addition to Station 1 firehall, replacement of a tanker chassis, concession-stand work and the Dayton Pike resurfacing project. He said the police department received three grants totaling about $200,000 and that the SRO program will require vehicle purchases and increased wages for new hires.
Separately, Fire Chief Dusty Morgan asked the board to approve a new vendor to paint the ladder truck after the original bidder could not provide a start date; the second-lowest bidder, Kenworth, quoted $198 more than the low bidder but could begin work immediately. City Attorney Elliott said a letter would need to be sent to the original vendor rescinding the prior award. Commissioner Shipley moved to approve the vendor change; Vice-Mayor Coleman seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
The budget amendment passed first reading with a unanimous vote; additional readings or final adoption would follow the city’s ordinance process.
