County manager outlines road grants, landfill repairs and budget amendments at March 25 work session

At a March 25 work session, Chattahoochee County Manager Thomas Weaver told commissioners the county received a Local Road Assistance grant that piggybacks the LMIG award and will help additional roads; staff reported recent repairs on McGlaun and Smith roads, riprap repairs on Liberty Hill Road and Wells Street, and a landfill headwall repair following an Environmental Protection Division inspection.
Weaver said the 2025 SPLOST account has begun receiving funds. Recreation and community development staff reported upcoming events including a Rabies clinic on April 5 and 4‑H activities. Samantha Hedgecoke (community development) and recreation staff provided the updates in packet materials.
Items recommended for the April 1 regular meeting included continuing work on cemetery bylaws (manager to coordinate Hedgecoke and the county attorney), and clarifying the conditional‑use permit process (county attorney to attend the planning & zoning meeting on March 27). Commissioners also discussed Riverbend and Liberty Hill road projects; staff noted Riverbend may be a regional or TSPLOST candidate.
County finance staff presented quarterly amendment needs that total roughly $294,725 from reserves to address items including property tax reimbursement, EMS salaries, prisoner housing, legal services and a coroner salary correction. Commissioners agreed to include quarterly amendments on a recurring work session agenda.
Chairman Charles Coffey raised concerns about inconsistent use of nondisclosure for public records and specifically referenced Q‑Public, saying the county should follow public‑records law and avoid unnecessary withholding. Coffey asked commissioners and staff to review the law and indicated he wanted practices corrected.
Friendship Road LMIG bid packets were discussed; staff recommended additional technical review and the item was left for further consideration at a subsequent work session.
