Cusseta‑Chattahoochee work session flags cemetery bylaws, CUP review and Friendship Road repairs

The Unified Government of Cusseta‑Chattahoochee County held a work session on Jan. 27, 2025, where County Manager Thomas Weaver outlined items to bring forward to the Feb. 4 regular meeting and a later evening session.
Weaver said cemetery bylaws will be discussed in a future work session and recommended inviting the Planning & Zoning Board to a Feb. 24 evening meeting to review the conditional‑use permit (CUP) process and address ambiguous verbiage in the county’s permit procedures. Commissioners agreed to schedule public hearings ahead of the Feb. 24 session and to invite Planning & Zoning to participate.
The manager proposed using 2024 LMIG funds to repair Friendship Road; the commission signaled agreement and asked staff to add road projects to future work sessions. Weaver also asked staff to begin creating a SPLOST bank account for funds administration and reported that HB581 discussion indicates the county will likely remain opted in but will need a special election on the proposed sales tax later this year.
Department updates included recreation/umpire staffing and field repairs (Mordie Askew), permits and code enforcement (Samantha Hedgecoke), water‑well repairs and new hires (reported for Chris Tymes), a rise in stray dogs (Lou Beck), and public works equipment and staffing changes including two promotions (Tom/Thomas K. Bickel). Public speaker Robert Sumner described plans to run charity events and trainings at the NSA compound and asked for county cooperation.
The work session moved into executive session at 10:12 a.m. and reconvened at 10:55 a.m.; Chairman Coffey said the closed meeting covered legal, personnel and real‑estate matters and that no votes were taken in closed session. The session adjourned at 10:58 a.m.
