Commission rescinds loan payoff, names Parks board members and hears residents’ safety concerns

The mayor announced five appointments to a reconstituted Parks and Recreation Board — Michael Jenkins, Andy Mitchell, Debra Rodery, Nate Sanden and Justin Sneed — and re‑appointed Mark Bivens and Phillip Shipley to the Planning Commission and Mike Marlow and Terri Robinson to the Zoning Board of Appeals; Mayor Everett said all appointees had accepted.
During citizens’ participation, Commissioner Jackie Penney asked whether anything could be done to keep large trucks off Hyatte Road after a Blood Assurance bus recently got stuck. Assistant Recorder Dolberry said there is no single fix because multiple GPS applications route traffic differently; Public Works Director Grant said he would check whether signage could be installed. Rohn Poe raised a question about a yield sign at Harrison Lane, and Commissioner Keith asked that shipping containers north of the water company and on Shearer Street be examined for potential removal.
Vice‑Mayor Coleman raised questions about assigning community service in lieu of fines, noting that with mowing season approaching Public Works staff will have limited capacity for litter pickup. Public Works Director Grant said a new community service employee had appeared in court and described a change in practice: whereas community service was previously 40 hours to be completed in 30 days, it is now one day to be completed within six months. Commissioners also offered condolences on recent deaths of former Mayor Max Orr, George Wright and Fred Skillern; Commissioner Penney reported that 20 trees were planted at Veterans Park for Arbor Day and said he had emailed about pursuing Tree City status.
