Snowflake council explores U.S. Forest Service tree permit to obtain free trees for town beautification

Town Council member Travis Kay told the council he has been working with the U.S. Forest Service on a permit that would allow the town to obtain trees at no cost for use in town beautification projects.
Council member Cory Johnson questioned the time, maintenance and cost implications of harvesting trees under a permit, suggesting funds might be better spent on irrigation infrastructure such as drip systems to maintain existing and future trees. Byron Lewis proposed finding partnerships with citizens and businesses to supply and care for trees. Mark Sheen recommended a cost/benefit analysis that identifies the number and varieties of trees desired before proceeding.
No decision to implement the permit program was made during the work session; council members asked staff to pursue additional analysis and potential partnerships.
The council adjourned after the item.
