Smyth County School Board accepts resignations, approves transfers, extracurricular hires and extra-pay teacher assignments
Summary
Following closed session the board approved personnel actions including several resignations and transfers, extracurricular hires and a roster of teachers authorized to receive additional compensation for extra instructional sections during planning periods.
After returning from a closed session authorized under the Virginia Freedom of Information Act, the Smyth County School Board approved a series of personnel actions on Dec. 8, 2025.
The board approved resignations for Kimberly Gibson (Instructional Aide, Oak Point Elementary), J. Keith Manual (Custodian, Oak Point Elementary) and Kalisha Wolfe (Instructional Aide, Marion Elementary). Dr. Paul Grinstead moved to approve the resignations and Ben Adams seconded; the motion passed 6-0.
The board approved personnel transfers including Stephanie Ellis from Food Service Assistant to Food Service Manager at Marion Senior High School, and Lorelei McGhee from Instructional Aide to Teacher at Oak Point Elementary. The transfers were approved on a 6-0 vote (motion by Dr. Grinstead, seconded by Ben Adams).
Extracurricular hires approved included Lorrin Brewer (yearbook academic supplement, Marion Elementary), Joe Dancy (assistant softball coach, Chilhowie High), Madison Prater (assistant indoor track coach, Chilhowie High) and M. Greg Sanchez (assistant softball coach, Chilhowie High). The board also accepted extracurricular resignations for Brandon Hutton and Tim Whisman (assistant baseball coaches, Marion Senior High). All actions were approved on unanimous votes.
The board also approved additional compensation for a list of district teachers to teach an extra instructional block during their planning period; the minutes list recipients and assigned subjects, including Vincent Adams (Math, Chilhowie High), Caleb Ashby (Agriculture, Marion Senior High), Greg Blackburn (Pre-engineering, SCTC), Tammy Ford (Art, Northwood High) and others. The motion to approve these assignments was made by Dr. Grinstead and seconded by Lynn White and passed 6-0.
These personnel and extracurricular staffing decisions were recorded as approved following closed session; the board certified the closed meeting under § 2.2-3712(D) of the Code of Virginia.
