Nelson County supervisors rank infrastructure, economic growth and housing as top Nelson 2042 priorities

The Nelson County Board of Supervisors on Sept. 19 used the Comprehensive Plan Implementation Matrix to set its top focus areas for the coming year, placing infrastructure to support sustainable growth first in the priority order.
County staff facilitated a ranking exercise during which supervisors classified focus areas as short‑term, ongoing or mid‑term. The top priority, with 12 votes, was "Improve infrastructure to support sustainable growth and development," including strategies to coordinate regional water supply planning and improve cellular service. The Board also prioritized bolstering and promoting economic growth, protecting and improving existing housing stock, and natural and cultural resource protection.
Board members discussed approaches for implementation, including selective invitations for departmental budget presentations and formalizing a five‑year Capital Improvement Plan to aid prioritization and transparency. Ms. Linda K. Staton reviewed the final priority order during the meeting wrap‑up. Dr. Jessica Ligon departed the meeting at 2:00 p.m., before final adjournment.
Staff noted many of the strategies are ongoing actions that will be worked into budget and CIP discussions and that the Board would revisit these priorities as part of annual budget planning.
