Nelson Health Department to move to Heritage Center; Board approves $58,667.57 FY24 carryover

Ryan McKay, Health Director for the Blue Ridge Health District, told the Board that Nelson County’s local health office will relocate from the Blue Ridge Medical Center to the Nelson Heritage Center with a phased resumption of services: WIC and Environmental Health will start operations at the Heritage Center Nov. 22, and clinical services (immunizations and family planning) are expected to resume after Board of Pharmacy certification in January.
McKay said the department has seen increases in family health visits, pre‑admission screenings and WIC caseload since returning in‑person services after the federal public health emergency ended. He also described harm‑reduction expansions (increased Naloxone access, fentanyl test strips and disposal bags) and a Community Health Worker with scheduled office hours in Nelson.
To support the move and program expansion, McKay requested a FY24 carryover of $58,667.57 to cover relocation costs, IT network installation in the new site, and expanded STI testing capacity. The Board approved the request unanimously (4-0).
County staff and board members expressed appreciation for the long search to secure space and for partners who assisted with the move; a tour of the new facility will be scheduled.
