Greenville council adopts ordinance incorporating Michigan Vehicle Code into city code

The Greenville City Council unanimously adopted Ordinance No. 24-06 on March 19, 2024, incorporating the Michigan Vehicle Code (MCL 257.1 et seq.) and the Uniform Traffic Code into the city code. Councilperson Johnson moved to approve the ordinance and Councilperson Barrus seconded; the motion passed 7-0.
The ordinance replaces Sections 42-1 and 42-2 of the Greenville Code and adopts the Michigan Vehicle Code and the Uniform Traffic Code by reference. It sets a general cap so that no ordinance violation under the incorporated provisions is punishable by more than 93 days’ imprisonment, except as specifically noted elsewhere in the code. The ordinance also expressly incorporates MCL 257.625(1)(c) related to operating with an alcohol content of .17 or more; offenses under that provision may carry one or more of the following penalties: community service for not more than 360 hours, imprisonment for not more than 180 days, and a fine between $200 and $700.
Mayor Jeff Scoby opened a public hearing before the vote and, after hearing no public comments, closed the hearing at 7:14 p.m. A complete copy of the ordinance and the referenced codes is available for public inspection in the Office of the City Clerk.
The ordinance takes effect 15 days after publication in a newspaper of general circulation, provided it is published within 10 days of adoption.
