Commissioners note strong permit values, Mayor asks state reps to revisit tax-cap impact

Commissioner Shipley told the Soddy-Daisy Board on June 6 that last month’s building permits showed more than $3 million in project value. "Permits for last month were up and strong totaling over $3 million," he said, and characterized the recent tax increase as "a good compromise of the commissioners."
Public Works Director Grant clarified that the permit total cited is the construction value, not the amount the city receives. He told the board the city’s permit fee receipts would have been approximately between $15,000 and $18,000 based on that total value.
Mayor Everett said he had asked State Representatives Watson and Hazelwood to research a state cap on tax increases that he said had been driven by growth in Middle Tennessee and "does not fit Soddy-Daisy and other municipalities." He asked City Manager Johnson to present other budget options for the board to consider.
The board did not take a vote on policy changes; the item was a policy discussion and a request for further research and options.
