Allegan High leaders say restorative practices cut behavior incidents and boost belonging

Allegan High School Principal Melanie Cassar told the Allegan Public Schools Board of Education on Feb. 10 that the school has used a mix of restorative practices and targeted interventions to improve student behavior and academic outcomes.

Cassar presented alongside Assistant Principal Duane Lyons, Restorative Practice Facilitator Jen Hamman and MTSS Coordinator Anne Bowers, describing programs including the Responsible Thinking Process, Early Warning Intervention Teams, Student Support Teams, proactive and restorative circles, and staff check-ins. According to the presenters, those steps have been associated with a decrease in behavior incidents, an increase in academic success and a more positive school climate.

Cassar framed the approach as data-driven and collaborative, saying the school uses outcomes data to guide interventions and to coordinate efforts among building leaders and support staff. Hamman was recognized by Cassar for sustained commitment to staff and students; the board acknowledged the recognition during the meeting.
