The Henderson City Council voted March 9 to authorize up to $50,000 for landscaping and enhancements to the Charles Street traffic island, a step that includes relocating veterans memorials and potentially installing water features.
City Manager Edward Blackmon said the plan calls for removing an evergreen tree at the island and moving memorials to a consolidated location; he said part of the objective is to position Henderson as the "City of Water" by introducing fountains or similar water features. Council Member Sara M. Coffey asked whether the specific fountains in the packet were being approved; Blackmon replied staff will tweak the design and obtain bids.
Council Member William Burnette asked whether the project will be funded from the General Fund, and Blackmon confirmed it would. Council Member Jason A. Spriggs noted the memorials and flag will be relocated together; Coffey asked about relocating a Purple Heart flagpole currently at Fire Station 2. The resolution (20-18) passed unanimously among members present.
Staff will solicit bids and return to Council with final designs and costs before execution. The vote authorizes enhancements up to the $50,000 limit but does not bind the City to specific design choices until bids and a final approval occur.
