Committee approves a package of community grants and small awards

The New Castle County Administrative Finance Committee approved a series of one-time grants and community awards from the FY26 contingency during its Aug. 26 meeting.

Chair George Smiley and members moved to consider R25-128 through R25-147 together, covering grant allocations for multiple volunteer fire companies; the committee approved that procedural motion by voice. Council members then introduced and approved individual community and nonprofit grants, including funding for local schools, civic associations and social-service groups.

Examples recorded in committee included a $1,000 allocation for the humanitarian group Giving Back Bikes, a $987.40 payment to Oberle Elementary School (Christina School District), $1,000 for Brandywine High School baseball boosters, $1,500 awards to Autism Delaware and to the Delaware Coalition Against Domestic Violence, and smaller civic association grants and reimbursements for historic markers. Council members made motions, seconds and approved each item by voice vote in committee.

Several members noted that the funds came from each member's council account or the contingency; a few motions were conditional (for example, an award conditioned on a nondiscrimination agreement). No extended debate occurred on these items in committee, and public comment was not recorded for the grant approvals.

The committee's approvals clear these items for full-council consideration and reflect council members' use of one-time contingency funding to support community organizations across New Castle County.
