Councilman Sheldon presented Ordinance 26-005, a proposed amendment to the grants budget to appropriate $100,000 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services through the state DHSS, division of substance abuse and mental health, for wastewater-related work and overdose tracking. "This is a pass through grant from the federal government," Sheldon said, adding that staff should cash it as soon as possible because the grant is retroactive to Sept. 30.
Sheldon described the funding as supporting new technology linked to wastewater monitoring and said the state and county would use the data to track overdoses in higher-risk areas. He said the grant would help identify locations with higher-than-usual overdoses and support targeted responses.
