Beverly Hills council meets in closed session and unanimously accepts settlement recommendation in Jamil case

The Beverly Hills Village Council voted 7-0 on Feb. 12 to accept its attorney’s recommendation to settle Veronica Jamil v. Village of Beverly Hills, et al., Case No. 2023-203676-NI.

Council President John George called the special meeting to order at 6:30 p.m. in the Village Council Chambers at 18500 W. Thirteen Mile Road. After opening formalities the council approved the meeting agenda, and Member Abboud arrived shortly thereafter at 6:33 p.m.

Interim Village Manager Trice introduced an item for the council to go into closed session to consult with Attorney Shane Nolan about pending litigation, citing the Open Meetings Act, MCL 15.268(e), and the statutory provision permitting discussion of privileged attorney-client memoranda, MCL 15.268(h). Mercer moved to enter the closed session, Hrydziuszko seconded and the roll call vote passed 7-0.

The council met in closed session from 6:37 p.m. to 6:46 p.m. and then returned to open session to consider a settlement offer. O’Gorman offered a resolution to accept Attorney Shane Nolan’s recommended settlement proposal in the Jamil case; the resolution passed on a roll call vote, 7-0.

A member of the public, Dan Nunez of Marguerite, spoke during public comment and apologized for remarks made at the previous meeting. There were no additional public comments recorded after the settlement action.

Member O’Gorman moved to adjourn at 6:49 p.m.; Mercer seconded and the motion carried.

The action recorded in the minutes directs the village to accept the settlement recommendation of its counsel; the minutes do not list settlement terms or amounts.
